News from the Shows 2016

Early May we attended the Raby Castle Orchard show, set in the beautiful grounds at Raby Castle County Durham the weather was cold and showery. A wide range of visitors attended we were pleased to see a good number of Disa growers from Scotland. We staged a colourful display of Pleiones. An enjoyable weekend meeting many old friends.

Late May we had the Sheffield Orchid show, at Chatsworth. We had a busy and successful show, helped by the fact that uniflora ‘Red River ‘in flower gave us a vibrant arrangement.

Early July saw us at RHS Hampton Court show, we had 15 x 6 stand, smaller than normal for the show. It worked really well for us, Sandra and Dave did the arranging using older varieties and new seedlings. Possibly one of our best displays, very full of plants, arranged to enhance the flower colours. The plants were in superb condition and we were very pleased with the overall display. We received a gold medal and had excellent sales and feedback.

Mid-July we travel to RHS Tatton Park flower show. The weather was unbearably hot, Sandra arranged the display with help and guidance from Dave. The heat in the marquee was intense, plants and personnel struggling during buildup. The finished display was good using old favourites and new varieties and seedlings, . Watsonii ‘Don’ and Brighouse and Rastrick Band made their show debut. A gold medal was awarded. In the Florar Design Studio, Bishop Burton College students were staging an exhibit in the ‘Future florist of the year’ competition titled ‘Rio Carnival’. The extreme heat had affected some of their flowers so the spare Disa flowers came to the rescue and were used in their display. It looked magnificent, winning them best in show (their section), Gold-medal and entry to compete Chelsea Flower Show-well done. We talked to many people at the shows and it’s always nice to discuss Disas with interesting people.
